General Appearance - Hardy dog, muscular and well proportioned; demeanor lively and alert. A supple animal.
Height - 24½ to 26-3/4 for dogs; 22 to 25¼ for bitches: one need not reach the minimum height in the young classes.
Head - Strong, quite long, stop marked and equi-distant from the top of the skull to the end of the nose; covered with hair forming beard and mustache, and eyebrows lightly veiling the eyes.
Muzzle - Neither narrow nor pointed. Rectilinear
Nose - More square than round. Always black.
Skull - Very slightly rounded.
Teeth - Strong, white and perfectly aligned.
Eyes - Horizontal, well-opened, quite large, not narrow, dark in color, with calm, intelligent expression.
Ears - Attached high, preferably cropped and carried erect; not flat, and somewhat short if left natural. All other things being equal preference shall be given to the dog with cropped ears carried erect.
Conformation - Neck muscular and free from the shoulders.
Chest - Large, deep and well descended.
Back - Straight
Croup - Slightly inclined.
Legs - Well muscled with strong bone and correct balance.
Hock - Not too low, the limb below the joint almost vertical.
Tail - Complete, well feathered, forming a hook at the end, carried low and not deviating before reaching the point of the hock.
Feet - Strong, round, ( between a cat foot and a hare foot ) black nails, tough pads, tight toes.
Hair - Long, wavy, dry ( like that of a goat ).
Color - All uniform colors are admissable except white. Deeper colors are recommended.
Dew Claws - Two dew claws on the hind feet. Even very typy dogs having only single dew claws cannot win a prize, only honorable mention.
