Comparison between Canadian &1925 French Briard standards

      The Canadian Kennel Club still uses a standard that is remarkably similar to the 1925 French standard. Both are reprinted below in English. The CKC standard has been minimally reordered in its points to facilitate comparison, but its words have not been changed.

      General Appearance: Hardy dog, supple, muscular, well-proportioned, demeanor lively and alert.

      Size:

      • 58 cm to 68 cm [22-3/4 to 26-3/4 in] for males,
      • 55 cm to 65 cm [21-3/4 to 25-1/2 in] for females.
      • One need not adhere to the minimum for puppies.

      Size: Height at shoulders -

      • dogs, 23-27 in. (58-69 cm):
      • bitches, 22-25-1/2 in (55-65 cm).
      • Young dogs may be below the minimum.

Usual colours: black, and black with some white hairs, dark and light grey, tawny, and combinations of two of these colours, provided there are no marked spots and the transition from one to the other takes place gradually and symmetrically.

      Dew Claws: Two dew claws on the hind feet. Even dogs of good type having only single dew claws may not be given a prize, only honorable mention.

      Two dewclaws on each hind leg are required. A dog with only one cannot be given a prize.

      Faults:

      • Pointed muzzle.
      • Eyes small, light in color, or almond shaped.
      • Croup too straight or too inclined.
      • White spot on the chest. White panel on the chest (serious fault).
      • Tail too short or carried over the back.
      • White nails.

      Faults:

      • Muzzle pointed.
      • Eyes small, almond shaped, or light in colour.
      • Rump straight or too sloped.
      • White spot on the breast (a large white spot is very bad).
      • Tail too short or carried over the back.

      Disqualifications:

      • Height below the minimum.
      • Lack of dew claws.
      • Short hair on the head or feet.
      • Tail non-existant or docked.
      • Light nose.
      • Wall-eye.
      • Curly hair.
      • White hair at the tips of the feet.
      • Spotted coat

      Disqualifications:

      • Size below the limit.
      • Absence of dewclaws.
      • Short hair on the head, face, or feet.
      • Tail lacking or cut.
      • Nose light in colour or spotted.
      • Eyes spotted.
      • Hair curled.
      • White hair on feet.
      • Spotted colours of the coat.
